Welcome to Silver-Labs.com!

Silver Labradors are a new but very popular colour variety of this versatile breed of dogs.  The demand for silver Labradors is very high for several reasons.  They truly are unique dogs that feature strikingly good looks.  But being purebred Labrador Retrievers, they also offer all the other wonderful characteristics of their breed.  Other than their colour, silver Labs are identical in every way to the much more common black, yellow and chocolate varieties of Labrador Retrievers.

Silver Labs have a striking appearance. Everyone is accustomed to seeing black, yellow and chocolate Labs, but silvers are grey or a light silver, similar to the almost ghostly colour of a Weimaraner. Almost everything about silver Labs – their coats, nails and noses, and even the pads on their feet – are this lovely shade. The exception is their eyes. Silver Labrador puppies are born with light blue eyes. They turn into a pale shade of yellow at six to eight months of age.

Labradors exhibit this interesting and unique colour only when they have a double dose of a dilute, recessive colour gene. Because silver Labs must have two of these recessive genes, they are fairly rare and cost significantly more than dogs with the standard Labrador colours. The first silver Lab recorded was born in the United States in 1985. Because the silver colour actually is a dilute version of the more typical chocolate Lab colour, the American Kennel Club currently registers silver Labs as being a pale shade of chocolate.

The Typical Personality of Silver Labs

The temperament and other characteristics of silver Labs are identical to Labrador Retrievers of the more standard colours. Their health, swimming and hunting abilities, size and weight, trainability and eagerness to please are the same. The only real difference is the silver Lab colour. They are purebred Labrador Retrievers in every way.

You might be looking for a hunting companion or want to participate in dog obedience, dog agility, tracking or field competitions. You might want to train a therapy dog. Or even more likely, you might just be looking for the perfect companion. No matter which one it is, the versatile and beautiful silver Lab makes a great choice. Silver Labs offer all the great qualities of a Labrador Retriever packaged inside a unique, striking appearance.

Silver Labradors: Dogs For Everyone

The Labrador Retriever is one of the friendliest, most likeable dogs you will ever meet, although they are protective when strangers are about and make very effective guard dogs. Gentle, patient and playful with children, they almost demand to play “fetch” with sticks, balls and other toys. And they are so eager to please you can easily train a Labrador to do almost anything. Bring your newspaper. Swim in the pool with your children. Pick up their toys. The possibilities for training these versatile dogs almost seem endless.

The breed began as hunting dogs, and many Labradors are still used in the field for that purpose. Some Labs are put to work as drug-sniffing or bomb-sniffing police dogs, saving lives on a regular basis. Others work as therapy dogs in hospital, hospice or nursing home settings, cheering patients and making their daily lives much more pleasant. Still others work as guide dogs for the blind or the hearing impaired. They even can detect the imminent onset of seizures and are used as assistance dogs for people subject to those disorders.

There's almost nothing a Labrador can't do. But being loyal, loving, obedient and intelligent, most Labrador Retrievers are cherished for being almost the perfect companion dog for just about every family.
